After first insisting that an intruder killed his mother in their US home, a 12-year-old boy has admitted to accidently shooting his Nigerian mother.

After midnight on August 6, Ayobiyi Cook, a 29-year-old registered nurse known to her friends as “Yo-Yo,” was discovered dead in the family’s Forestdale, Alabama home in the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue.

Initially, her son had told authorities that an intruder had broken into their home, shot his mother, and then fled.

Deputy Chief David Agee said, “The child initially made up a scenario that detectives felt was not plausible.

“Sheriff’s Detectives were able to conclude after an investigation that the victim’s 12-year-old son accidentally fired a gun, killing his mother.

“After further questioning, the youngster eventually modified his tale.

Agee said that “the child eventually gave an accurate description of what happened.”

“The shooting was inadvertent, according to the evidence at the scene, and the Family Court system will deal with the offense. The youngster will stay with the family, who have been helpful throughout the process.”

According to Birmingham Real-Time News, the boy’s father is a police officer with the Birmingham Police Department and was on duty when the incident occurred.

On August 12, at the Faith Memorial Chapel in Bessmer, Alabama, a funeral service for the deceased mother will be performed.
