Early life and education
Reid, the third youngest child, was born in Croydon, South London. From 1975 to 1981, she attended the exclusive Croham Hurst School. From 1981 to 1987, she attended the independent Croydon High School, and from 1987 to 1989, she attended St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London. When she was nine years old, her parents split. Her mother was a nurse, and her father worked as a management consultant. When Reid was a teenager, she made her acting debut with Shirley Anne Field in a theatrical version of Agatha Christie’s Spider’s Web (1982), and later with Peter Barkworth and Harriet Walter in The Price (1985) on Channel 4.
Reid received her training as a journalist at Cardiff University’s Centre for Journalism, where she earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism. Reid studied politics and philosophy at the University of Bristol (1989–1992), when she served as editor of the student newspaper Epigram.
Reid started her career as a producer and correspondent for BBC Radio Bristol before moving on to Radio 5 Live. She then worked as a correspondent for BBC News 24 for two years. Reid was three months pregnant with her first child when she accepted a temporary position as a stand-in presenter for an hour after the 23:00 presenter failed to show up one evening.
Reid was a prominent BBC Breakfast presenter who previously co-hosted the show with Charlie Stayt on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Reid co-hosted the show with Bill Turnbull on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Since 2012, when she took over for lead presenter Sian Williams, she has held that position. Reid gave up his Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast hosting duties in 2010 to work on the brand-new show Sunday Morning Live. Within two weeks of the first series’ finale, on November 21, 2010, she returned to her weekend BBC Breakfast presenting responsibilities.
Reid used to read the headlines on The Andrew Marr Show on a regular basis. When Andrew Marr arrived late for the program after speaking with the incoming Prime Minister David Cameron on May 16, 2010, she temporarily filled in for him during the Sunday newspaper review. Reid returned the paper to Marr after reviewing it. Following Marr’s prolonged absence due to a stroke in January 2013, Reid first hosted the main show on 10 March 2013. Reid hosted the BBC’s live coverage of the 2009 Oscars from Los Angeles on February 22, 2009, and he also hosted coverage of the 2010 Oscars on March 7. Reid hosted the New Year Live program on BBC One on December 31, 2013.
Reid was reportedly being courted by ITV with a £1 million salary in February 2014 for their new breakfast show. Reid had previously denied rumors that she would be leaving Strictly Come Dancing for ITV in December 2013, claiming that if sliced open, she would “bleed BBC.” The BBC announced Reid’s transfer to ITV on March 3 to host the network’s new Good Morning Britain, which replaced Daybreak as the morning program. Every Monday through Wednesday, she co-hosts the program with a different male presenter, and on Thursdays, she does so with Ben Shephard. She is the host of the 6–9 am show.
Reid and other Good Morning Britain hosts made an appearance on a special Text Santa episode of Tipping Point on December 19, 2014. Reid and Matt Tebbutt co-presented Save Money: Good Food in 2017. Reid had a brief guest appearance on Hollyoaks in October 2018. Reid and TV judge Robert Rinder made an appearance on Celebrity Gogglebox in July 2020. Reid conducted a live interview with Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Good Morning Britain on May 3, 2022.
The week after it was revealed that Reid would join ITV, the Television and Radio Industries Club named her Newsreader of the Year at their annual awards ceremony in March 2014. She received the same honor once more in 2015. She also received an honorary fellowship from Cardiff University, where she studied before, in 2015.
After 16 years of marriage, Reid and his boyfriend, former sportscaster Dominic Cotton, split in 2014. Reid and her three kids reside in South London. Reid, who competed in Strictly Come Dancing in 2013, visited Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park stadium with her dancing partner. Reid disclosed her relationship with Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish in November 2018. However, the breakup of the couple was revealed in April 2019.
When commenting on the meals on Saturday Kitchen, Reid would occasionally bring up her pescetarian diet with chef James Martin. She claimed to have “very slight tinnitus” in 2015.
Reid has sponsored events for the Myotubular Trust and Voluntary Arts England and often contributes to Media Trust, a nonprofit that connects other charities with the media sector. She spent three months in Sri Lanka as a volunteer media consultant for a charity that counsels civil war victims and runs orphanages and social development programs in 1998, right before she started working as a correspondent for Breakfast News.
Reid ran the London Marathon on April 22, 2012, in slightly over five hours while raising money for Sport Relief.
